Daughters of Heaven

It is one of those cold bright mornings again - when the mist is just rising - and even though it's ten o'clock it doesn't seem like the kind of morning that you want to get up for - or atleast not leave the house for.

Tonight is the first night of "daughters of heaven", our play - and after a week of shivering in a church hall as the technical aspects of fake blood and lighting are negotiated it all seems to be coming together. It is a true story about two 15 year olds who decide to kill their mother (cheery I know). It is set in New Zealand in the 1950's. After 6 weeks of rehearsing I feel a real fondness not so much for the play (which sends shivers down my spine and now after so many rehearsals feels empty of all real emotions or characters) but for this group of people - our cast. The idea of a group of people giving up their lives, their time, their energy for hours and hours each day - just for the sole purpose of bringing a creative project is quite amazing. Particuarly when it is such a random group as our own. Our degrees teeter on the edge of failure - but we do not mind as long as we have sold enough tickets and have found the perfect consistency for fake blood.

Isn't it amazing how the intense rehearsals for a play can create a family out of people who were complete strangers only a couple of weeks earlier? A family with its very own frame of reference and humor. I guess the only downside is the withdrawal symptoms when you have to adopt to the normal world again afterwards...
